Brush up on some of the city’s winter maintenance and snow removal regulations to help keep you moving, safe and ticket-free when the snow flies.

Winter parking restrictions go into effect
** Nov. 15 until April 15**

While vehicles may be parked on the odd-numbered side of city streets when snow clearing operations are not in effect — unless posted signs indicate otherwise — parking is strictly prohibited during the 24-hour period surrounding snow events. Existing parking permits and overnight exemptions held by residents are not valid during snow clearing operations HOWEVER IN CORNELL to assist Permit Holders, the City has created six locations where Permit Holders Only will be able to park their vehicles overnight during periods of snow removal. The six locations are:

  • Northvale Road
  • White’s Hill Avenue
  • Cornell Rouge Boulevard
  • Country Glen Road
  • Cornell Park Avenue
  • Silverdale Road

The permitted parking area at each location will be identified by two signs placed at each end of the permitted area. The signs will read- “Snow Removal Parking – Permit Required”. Permit Holders will be required to remove their vehicles once snow removal operations are completed on area streets, in order that the City then be able to plow the temporary parking areas BY 7AM. Vehicles left in the temporary areas once the adjoining are all plowed will be subject to ticketing/ towing. With snow plow operations occurring on the adjacent streets during the temporary parking period, the area may be blocked by snow and shovelling may be required to exit/ enter the parking areas.

Vehicles parked on a city street during snow clearing operations will be subject to a $150 ticket and/or towed.

  • Markham’s Winter Maintenance APP shows the progress of road and sidewalk plows during snow storms. The city clears 2,200 kilometres of road and 1,100 km of sidewalks.

Roads are plowed, salted or sanded based on a roads classification system, which prioritizes all roads maintained by the city — beginning with primary roads, followed by secondary and local roads and then sidewalks. To see a list of who plows what roads when, view the city’s Roads e-Map for a detailed listing of municipal and regional roads, as well as provincial highways within city limits. Residents are reminded not to push snow from clearing driveways and paths on to the road, which can cause hazardous driving conditions to motorists and is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act.

  • The City’s Snow Windrow Removal Assistance Program is designed to help disabled and elderly residents maintain road access from their driveways during the winter season. Windrows will be cleared following a 7.5-centimetre (three-inch) snow fall within eight hours after crews plow the road. Residents must apply for the service. PLEASE NOTE: LANEWAYS IN CORNELL  ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THIS PROGRAM, FRONT LOADERS CLEAR LEAVING MINIMAL LIP OF SNOW.
