When we were kids, the rule was “Be home before the street lights come on.” Times have changed, but we all still have concerns about the safety of our kids and the well-being of our community.
I’ve been contacted by a number of residents concerned about a group of youth, some in cars hanging out at some of the parks…possibly smoking pot then driving. That is a concern for sure. The youth are teenagers likely from Cornell area but as we know, more than 6 youth, we sometimes see them as a gang. They are likely just having fun, chatting but maybe keep an eye out. Nothing has been reported re vandalism or anti social behaviour. The Police are aware of the pot smoking and do monitor with frequent drive-bys. The preferred location to date is Cornell Commons park/forest, Cornell Public School and Benjamin Marr Park with the basketball court. The court is a fabulous place where many enjoy a game or just practising their throwing so we do not want anyone to feel worried or intimidated by a larger group or older teens. If your children mention they left the courts because they felt unsafe, please let us know.
It’s hard to believe we’re already entering the August long weekend. It’s been a challenging time, especially for our young people with no school, nowhere to go, and it’s so much harder to find summer jobs. Playgrounds and benches are all open now. Sports fields as well though many clubs will have shortened seasons and new rules for playing.
I wish you a great August, and I’m optimistic we’re on the road back to our pre-COVID way of life. I’m very much looking forward to “business as usual” and more enjoyable social interactions. Stay well.
