Fall is upon us and the kids are back to school. The great weather we’ve been having means more of our kids are walking to and from school and playing outside in parks and laneways.

Safety for students and other pedestrians is a concern for all of us, yet my office still receives numerous emails and phones calls from many Ward 5 schools and residents reporting dangerous driving, speeding, illegal u-turns and parking.  Crossing guards fear for themselves and the children as they make their way across the roads. There are strict rules and penalties for not obeying the posted speed limits, and of course the worst case scenario injury or death of pedestrians. We must work together to slow down, be aware, take our time – especially around school zones and cross walks (marked and un-marked).  Are the few moments saved by speeding or blowing through a stop signs worth a life?

Please SLOW DOWN and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists.  A slow down initiative is coming shortly, please stay tuned. Together we will make Ward 5 safe for everyone.
