Another Jewell in our Community

No doubt, many Ward 5 residents have already been to the brand new Cornell Community Park – and what a park it is! Though a long wait, longer than anticipated, we have one more wonderful park in Ward 5 with something for everyone. My assistant has been spending time with her toddler grandson at the playground and water play, which is phenomenal, and  I look forward to bringing my grandson.

In addition to recreation space including a huge playground; water play with a bucket which the kids love; a skateboard area; walking trail; that great hill which so many had fun this past winter tobogganing down; the covered picnic area; washrooms and great tables with umbrellas, the park is host to permitted league play on lit soccer fields, hardball baseball diamonds, tennis courts and 8 pickle ball courts.

Did you know that the pickle ball courts were built with National level play in mind? The court dimensions are standard but the markings, lines and net must meet strict regulations and these courts are acrylic, a great surface. Whether you are learning, playing for fun or a member of the Markham Pickleball Club, the goal is to perpetuate the growth and advancement of pickleball on an international level and to set goals for worldwide play and recognition. The court times are split evenly between League and recreation for residents. Self-locking gates and automatic lights make it safe and easy to use.

Dedicated Parking

It seems most local residents are walking to the park but if you did not know, there are two dedicated parking lots at either end of the park for convenience.  Though there is lots of layby parking around the park, it would be great to keep as much of that space open for local residents and their visitors fronting the park.

We are still looking for volunteers for the winter outdoor skating rink. Any and all dedicated folks to have another great outdoor activity for all, about 10 would do the trick, I too am eager to help. Please let me know if you are available and interested.

The City of Markham will be hosting an “official” park opening later this summer. Please stay tuned to learn more about the event.

Enjoy the park. I look forward to seeing you.
